This illustration is part of The Motherhood Prints, a collection of illustrations made by various artists inspired by motherhood. A project by NINA, a sustainable brand of high-quality baby clothes and accessories that donated 10% of profits went to Awamaki, a Peruvian charity supporting artisan women.
At the time of the commission, I was a new mother myself so inspiration was easy to come by as motherhood has just started unfolding in my life. I wanted to represent these new beginnings, my daughter's and mine. As Osho said:
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."
I wanted to convey protection, warmth, shelter and this powerful energy, ignited by love. Here, the hands are wings and mountains. Our hands can mean and do so much: soothe, guide, deliver, hold. The sun stands for beginnings, creation, source. The text says: all the love under the sun
